Churches told Storyful that when the Mako shark bit the bait, his clients were fishing for kingfish. The shark jumped out of the water shortly after being hooked. The crew said the shark was "not pleased" and promptly cautioned everyone not to approach him.

Churches and the crew were left wondering what they were going to do when the shark laid calm after some thrashing about.

Fortunately, the shark was able to escape on its own. Churches subsequently told The New Zealand Herald, "He got out safe. "We weren't able to accomplish much. They get completely crazy, so we can't approach near it by going up the front. They had "windscreens and hard-tops blocking it," he said.

Churches further stated to the newspaper that the clients were "counting their blessings" and were appreciative that "he didn't land on the rear of the boat." He also believed they were incredibly fortunate. "We were fortunate that it didn't get into the rear of the boat," the speaker said, "because otherwise the narrative may have been completely different."
