Amazing Video of "Levanter" Cloud Over Gibraltar Rock

The almost 1,400-foot-tall Rock of Gibraltar is surrounded by a haze that seems to come out of thin air.

A time-lapse video of a rare cloud formation known as the Levanter that was recently captured on camera in exquisite detail was shared on Twitter by Met Office Gibraltar. The Levant wind, which blows westward in the area, inspired the name of the cloud pattern. The Levanter cloud in the video looks to be flowing from the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, which is in the European British colony of the same name. The location is well-known for having plants and animals that are uncommon in other European nations.

"The London Gatwick @easyJet flight taxiing and taking off from @RAF_Gib this morning with the backdrop of some impressive #Levanter cloud over the Rock of #Gibraltar. The #levanter cloud just keeps getting better today!" Met Office Gibraltar.

The video was recorded at Gibraltar International Airport and released on August 24; nevertheless, it is now starting to gather popularity.

The almost 1,400-foot-tall Rock of Gibraltar is surrounded by a haze that seems to come out of thin air. Since being released, the 21-second video has gotten over four million views and over 3,000 likes.

When air moves around a mountain, it creates a "banner cloud" known as the Levanter. The curvature of the terrain underneath it causes orographic clouds, such as banner clouds, to form, according to the UK Met Office.

The Met Office website added, "When the wind blows against a hill or mountain it is pushed to raise. Air cools as it rises and the water vapors within it condenses to create a cloud."

These clouds build up in layers and eventually settle around the top or, as seen in the video from Gibraltar, are carried away by the wind.
